Men's Health Clinic Cambridge
Prostate Cancer
As men get older, they may begin to have problems with their prostate which can affect the passing of urine. If you are experiencing some problems, please make an appointment with your GP who will:
- Order a PSA blood test – if this is elevated, they will invite you back for a digital rectal exam (DRE)
- Get you to repeat the PSA blood test one month later
- Refer you for a specialist urological opinion if your PSA result remains elevated or your DRE is abnormal
Men’s Health Check
If you are over 45 years, we recommend that you start regular annual health checks. If you are of Māori, Pacific, or South Asian ethnicity we recommend you start these from age 30 – this is due to the earlier onset of heart disease in these ethnicities.
Your health check may include:
- A discussion regarding your family history and your lifestyle including exercise, diet, smoking, alcohol consumption and sleeping habits
- A physical examination checking your pulse rate, blood pressure, height, weight and possibly a targeted examination of vital organs such as your heart depending on your risk factors
- Routine blood tests e.g. cholesterol, blood sugar, liver and kidney function
- A discussion regarding your sexual health
- Additional tests and diagnostic procedures where recommended in certain individual case
